Study Abroad Photo Contest 2011
Cultural Adventure
1st Place
Jennifer Monnet, "Fortune Telling", Beijing, China
Mothers at a legal aid center brought their one-year olds into the office for an afternoon of fortune telling, a local tradition that marks a baby’s first birthday. Placed among a collection of objects, each baby was expected to choose one, symbolic of its future career. Here, calculator in hand, Baby Shaoyu is destined to become an accountant.
2nd Place
Jennifer Monnet, "Keeping Shop," Beijing, China
The first time I stepped off the bus in front of this shop, I was momentarily stunned to see a rooster, chilling in the doorway. As I walked up to it, snapping photos of the beautiful animal, I realized he wasn’t alone. With mischief in their eyes, three young boys were stealthily creeping up behind him with a fly swatter (the bit of blue peeking out from under the rooster’s tail feathers). I have since been back several times and each time the rooster is there, patiently guarding the store.
3rd Place
Priyam Bhargava, "Tango en La Plaza," Buenos Aires, Argentina
Argentinian Tango, a form of romantic dancing/walking, being performed by a passionate old couple.
Most Picturesque
1st Place

Emily Potts, "Sunset Safari", Kenya
As we were finishing our game drive at Lake Nakuru, the sun was setting across the African savannah. The experience was surreal and was hard to capture with a picture. During the game drive that evening, we saw giraffes, zebras, water buffalo, rhinos, hyenas, and many other animals.
2nd Place

Dillon Etter, "Annecy at Dusk", Annecy, France
This is a photo of the Palais de l'Isle jail in the center of the Thiou, a canal in Annecy, France. It was built in 1132 and served many purposes over the years. It was first the residence of the Lord of Annecy, then the administrative headquarters of the Count of Geneva, then a courthouse, a mint, and finally a jail.
3rd Place
Evangeline Hodgson, "Ghanaian Man Gazes at Ocean", Cape Coast, Ghana
Cape Coast Castle, the location where African Slaves were held captive before they were shipped to the New World, was a haunting yet beautiful location. Many local people from the fishing village surrounding the castle stood to enjoy the breathtaking views of the ocean.
Most Unusual
1st Place
Jennifer Monnet, "Cloning a You", Beijing, China
In the back corner of a busy market, a man sculpts armies of clay clones, made to order.
2nd Place
James Gieser, "Phi Phi Island Monkey", Phi Phi Island, Thailand
A large group of monkeys live on this section of Phi Phi Island. They scamper across the beach, jump from rock to rock, and swing from trees...and also move freely amongst their human visitors, searching for food.
3rd Place
Darci Speakman, "Evangeline's Elephant," Mole National Park, Ghana
While staying in Mole National Park, we encountered two wild elephants. While taking cover from the rain, Evangeline peers around a column to look at one of the large creatures.
IUPUI Students Abroad
1st Place
Evangeline Hodgson, "Goofing Around with Students After Class", Accra, Ghana
School days at Morning Star School in Accra, Ghana were long and hot, but after class we always made time for fun. Students liked to take photos with my camera, especially when silly faces were involved.
2nd Place
Rick Farnsworth, "Dental Clinic in Ecuador", Ecuador
Local elementary school class room that was converted to the dental clinic. Patients were treated on classroom benches at no cost. Notice the nice lady in the back cooking our lunch.
3rd Place
Rober Lamberts, "IUPUI Students on cruise", Mediterranean Sea
This is the cruise my classmates and I traveled on during our study abroad trip. The cruise took us to several Greek islands and Turkey.
